Writing for News Ltd, sports reporter Rebecca Wilson has scored all of Australia’s cricket commentators out of 10 – ranking both the Channel 9 team and Channel 10’s Big Bash team.

“This is my opinion only and may not reflect that of the Twitterverse or this newspaper,” Wilson wrote in the Herald Sun.

Here’s her scorecard:

The Big Bash

FREDDIE FLINTOFF

“If he sticks to the cricket, stays away from the bad jokes and lets his mates do most of the talking, he isn’t that bad after all: 5/10 (with two marks deducted for terrible jokes.)”

MARK WAUGH

“My favourite BBL commentator with just the right mix of knowledge, insight and humour… Dry as an old boot and Australian cricket royalty, he is born to call this great hybrid of the game: 10/10

MEL MCLAUGHLIN

“She was the original anchor and linchpin of the BBL. Now she’s an aside to the boys. Should have a more prominent role, particularly given the rise and rise of women’s cricket and the increase in female audiences: 8/10

DAMIAN FLEMING

“This guy knows his cricket and has a delightfully understated sense of humour we are only just discovering… A real find. 8.5/10

RICKY PONTING

“He’s smart, technically brilliant but occasionally just a little too straight… He made a great call spurning the Nine sausage factory and signing up with Ten: 9/10

ADAM GILCHRIST

“Was being lined up as the kingpin for several seasons but isn’t quite up to the frontman gig: 8/10

MARK HOWARD

“Seems like a nice bloke they ran into on their way into the cricket and asked him up for a drink. Doesn’t add much to what the experts have to say. Ten has him there as a hand-holder for blokes who are big enough not to need one anymore: 5/10

MEL JONES

“A cricketer herself, this girl knows her stuff. Asks incredibly Insightful questions, players respect her for great, straight interviewing skills and observations. There’s no frills here, which I love. Could be a star in the making: 8/10

Channel 9

MARK TAYLOR

“Knows the game backwards, gets the machinations of the dressing room but sometimes talks to us like we are seven years old: 8/10

IAN HEALY

“Uses all of the wrong intonations, tends to get overexcited at tedium (just like Slats) but has a lovely character and astute knowledge of cricket: 7/10

JAMES BRAYSHAW

“I can’t stand listening to this bloke. He’s more machismo than The Terminator and more cliched than Crocodile Dundee: 4/10

MARK NICHOLAS

“He sounds like a gun for hire, which he is, plying his commentary trade to anyone who will pay him a fortune (he works everywhere)… I just don’t like watching the guy: 4/10

SHANE WARNE

“When will Warne realise he has retired, that we don’t want to see his old hairstyles in the first 10 minutes of play and that watching replays of him playing in breaks of play is akin to pulling teeth?

“For those offended by my objections, ask yourself if Richie or Chappell or Lawry would bore us with pictures of themselves in their playing days. They would find the entire notion tedious.

“Ego aside (if that’s possible), Warne is repetitive and plays favourites. He showed promise in the commentary box early on but that giant ego took hold and got the better of him: 4/10

MICHAEL SLATER

“He tends to become overexcited at the most boring moment but he is happy to be a team player and you can just tell he loves what he’s doing: 7/10

BILL LAWRY

“Bill Lawry reminds us why we don’t like commentators like JB. He is quirky, interesting and a classic bloke. He has called more cricket Tests than all of the others put together and we never, ever want him to retire: 10/10

BRETT LEE

“Sweetest bloke you would ever meet but I’m not sure the cut and thrust of commentary is his future. The jury is out mainly because the voice lacks authority: 5/10

IAN CHAPPELL

“Dry, straight, no nonsense, Chappell is one of the originals. He has a strong sense of history, thinks deeply about the game and understands the dark art of captaincy better than anyone: 9/10

What do you think – would you make any changes?
