Port Adelaide assistant coach Aaron Greaves says he felt sorry for the club’s defenders during their Saturday night loss — but he’s not letting them off the hook.
“Our pressure wasn’t good enough through the middle of the ground,” Aaron told Leith Forrest on Sunday. “When Essendon’s quality midfielders are able to run and carry the ball through space it makes it very hard for the defenders.”
“There were some times when I felt sorry for our defenders and thought there wasn’t much that they could do,” he said. “And there was other times that we’ve looked through that they probably could’ve been better at some contests as well.”

Aaron paid tribute to Essendon:
“They were fantastic… they had us on the ropes early,” he said.
“They just looked stronger than us, they looked tougher than us, they looked quicker than us.
“Hopefully we put it down to a disappointing performance, and one where maybe we weren’t physically right on the night.
“Hopefully our response will come in our preparation and how we perform against Brisbane this week.”
