Port Adelaide star Chad Wingard was given a new nickname by teammates after he played a shut down role on Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury on Saturday.

“He didn’t take too kindly to the boys calling him Kane Cornes after the game — our new tagger,” Port’s Chris Davies told Leith Forrest on FIVEAA. “I’m not sure he’s going to want to do it every week…”

But the move was proof of another string in Chad’s bow, said Davies:

“We spoke at halftime about the influence that Pendlebury was having. You can counteract these types of things in a couple of ways. Sometimes it’s putting someone on him who becomes a lockdown player, and other times it’s putting a different type of player on him who can hurt him the other way.

“Chad had a pretty good third quarter, so from our perspective it worked.

“He’s such a good player, he has so many weapons, adding a defensive aspect can’t be a bad thing.”
