Leigh Matthews tells FIVEAA the AFL could get by without runners.

“No, we don’t need them,” he told Rowey and Bicks on Wednesday. “Clearly we don’t need them because if all 18 teams are working under the same basis then they’re not essential to the game.”

Leigh’s comments follow an AFL investigation into how long GWS runner Nick Maxwell has been spending on field.

He said:

“I think that the AFL have to be really harsh on runners they think are spending too much time out on the ground or maybe just standing in positions that are blocking space… and fine them accordingly, so to say to all the other runners: listen, you’re job is to deliver the message the coach gives you and get off the ground.”
