Drivers are likely to overestimate their abilities when asked to rate themselves behind the wheel, according to Adelaide University.

The uni’s Dr Lisa Wundersitz has told FIVEAA Breakfast:

“If you ask someone to rate themselves as a driver — from 1 to 10, how good a driver are you? — most people would put themselves above 7, and probably closer to 9.

“The split comes first with younger and older — it’s actually younger people who tend to think they’re better drivers, and particularly younger males…

“While they think that they’re a better driver… younger drivers are also known to underestimate the risks on the road. When you’ve got that combination of thinking ‘l’ll be alright’ and ‘I’ve got the skills to deal with it’ when that’s not actually the case, it can be a really dangerous combination.”
