“Do yourself a favour and forget everything you saw,” Dwayne Russell says about round one of the NAB Challenge.

“It’s a giant illusion NAB Challenge, especially round one – smoke and mirrors,” he told Rowey and Bicks on FIVEAA.

“It’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s great to have footy back, but there’s no real substance to the results.

“Key players are missing, you’ve got top-up players playing for clubs – you’ll never some of these top-up players ever again… you’ve got teams not even coached by their actual coach.”

Some have questioned the value of a pre-season competition after a number of serious injuries, including to Western Bulldogs’ Tom Liberatore and West Coast Eagles’ Eric Mackenzie.

“Believe a little bit more of what you see in round two perhaps, and then about half of what you see in round three, and then we’ll get excited,” Dwayne said.
