A national recommendation that parents ask their under 5s for permission before taking their photo is “totally absurd”, says FIVEAA’s David Penberthy.
The advice is included in an ‘Online Safety for Under 5s’ booklet to be launched in Canberra on Tuesday.
Penbo told FIVEAA Breakfast it was a “bizarre” story:
“The extent to which bureaucratic minds have obsessed about that is extraordinary… totally absurd.
“We’re getting to a point as a society where we’re starting to regard what was once normal loving behaviour through the prism of the minority of really evil things that happen.”

According to E-safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant:
“By involving them early, we can foster sound habits and establish the resilience and critical thinking they will need if a stranger with malicious intent tries to solicit their image online — or if they are tempted to share a compromising photo of a friend online. And we have seen this can happen with children as young as three.
“We are creating a child’s digital footprint, sometimes from when they are in the womb and there is a dark side. You just have to stop and think and be sensible about it.”
