With Hamish Hartlett opting to remain at Port Adelaide, Kane Cornes says the club’s trade strategy is now out the window.

“Their strategy going in was to try and get two picks inside around about 15,” Kane has told FOX Sports.

“Hamish Hartlett was the player who held some currency, but the fact that he had four years to go on his contract that he signed 12 months ago was always going to make it difficult.

And now he’s decided to remain at Port Adelaide, which I think is a good move from him but throws the club strategy in the trade period out the window.”

He said the Hartlett U-turn was “not ideal” for the club…

“Clearly his self esteem and a bit of confidence might’ve taken a hit, but knowing him personally he’s a really strong minded player, really professional about the way he goes about it.

“He met with Ken Hinkley and Travis Boak yesterday and clearly they’ve decided to go down this path.

“I think the big winner out of it is Ken Hinkley. I wasn’t sure if a second pick in the draft was going to help him next year, considering he probably needs to win and he’s under pressure to do so.

“Hartlett clearly still in their best five to 10 players — and good for Ken Hinkley that he remains at the club.”
