Adelaide Crows midfielder Scott Thompson has been added to the list of current players given AFL life membership – but when asked about it on FIVEAA, it was news to Thompson!
“I hadn’t actually been told that myself yet,” Thompson told the FIVEAA sports show on Friday. “If that’s the case, I’m certainly quite happy and honoured to be part of that group.”
Thompson was part of a group of current players to be awarded life membership, including Shaun Burgoyne, Sam Mitchell, James Kelly, Brendon Goddard, Robert Murphy and Drew Petrie.
Thompson played 39 games in his first four years at Melbourne, and 256 with Adelaide over the next 11 years.
“It’s certainly been an enjoyable time at the Adelaide footy club,” he said.
“We’ve been close a couple of times and around the mark, which has been frustrating at times not to get to the last dance.
“But I think we’ve got a group that hopefully in the coming years is capable of creating something special.”
LISTEN to Scott Thompson here:
Thompson said it would be a case of “touch and feel” to see how former teammate Patrick Dangerfield’s absence would impact on him.
“Yes he’s going to be a big loss for us, but we’ve still got some numbers that we can roll through the midfield.”
“That’s been one of our big strengths over the past few years. That’s always a challenge for opposition sides to worry about,” he said.
“I might find myself going forward more than previous years.”
With taggers widely tipped to make a big comeback in season 2016, Thompson identified the Crows most likely to be targeted.
“I’m tipping it will either be a Rory Sloane or a Brad Crouch if he’s up and firing – Richard Douglas, throw into that mix – there’s a number of blokes,” Thompson said.
