Chad Wingard says he wanted to make sure he got what he was worth in a new deal which will keep him at Port Adelaide until the end of 2019, but says staying was a simple decision.
Reigning premiers Hawthorn were reportedly the keenest of a number of suitors hoping to lure the exciting 22-year-old.
“Once you see the strong core and the leadership sign straight away, it definitely gives you a lot more confidence signing with the team,” Wingard told FIVEAA.
“I have big belief in the team, the coaches and the whole organisation… it made the decision really simple.”

“I wanted to make sure I got what I was worth,” said Wingard. “The club was really happy with what we put in to offer, and it all went pretty smoothly… there was no hiccups.”
Wingard said he had a big say in negotiations with the club.
“I probably have the most say out of myself and my manager. Obviously we try and work with the club – in the end it’s going to be between myself and the club and what we agree on.
“We came to terms pretty early and we we’re both happy so we got it done really quickly,” he said.
