The annual lamb ad has almost become an Australian institution, but this year’s effort has many asking whether Sam K and his friends have gone too far as the ad comes in for some serious criticism…

The ad titled “Commence Operation Boomerang” brings together “Lambassador” Sam Kekovich and SBS newsreader Lee Lin Chin in a mission to save Aussies abroad from having to go without a lamb barbecue on Australia Day.

A scene in which a vegan’s apartment is set on fire has proved especially controversial, generating a flood of complaints.

And a spokeswoman for the Advertising Standards Bureau told News Ltd the ad has received close to 300 complaints since the ad was launched – most about discrimination against vegans.

She the ad is likely to be reviewed before Australia Day.

“It will go to our next board meeting. The board will decide on whether to dismiss or uphold the ad. If it is dismissed it has to then be removed,” she said.

Meanwhile the MLA’s Andrew Howie says it’s been their most successful ad so far, having already been viewed more than one million times.

“We set out to entertain every year, unfortunately in trying to appeal to the masses you are not able to appeal to everybody,” Mr Howie said.
