It’s commonly thought that TV is bad for you… But here are six health benefits of everybody’s favourite way to relax.

There are plenty of studies linking TV with obesity and greediness, but now there are some new studies that show watching television is actually good for us.

1. Watching TV can improve your self control

While you may be in the process of binge-watching your favourite Netflix show, studies reveal that people who watch TV are able to stay more on top of their self-control, more so than those who don’t watch that much/any TV.

Why does it help people from giving in to their bad impulses? The happiness and good mood that comes from watching the shows is the “digital equivalent of friends and family,” – giving us comfort, so we are more likely to behave in other areas of our life that require discipline.

2. Watching TV is good for your sex life

When couples watch TV together, they’re more likely to have sex more often than those who don’t – 32 per cent of people who underwent a study attributed that they could watch their favourite shows while having sex – apparently it’s really good for relationships. 29 per cent of couples found watching TV together made them feel closer.

3. Watching TV can make you feel more generous

A study revealed that when people watch nature shows, they come out feeling more energetic and giving. There must be something about watching cute animals and beautiful scenery that makes us want to do the right thing.

4. Watching TV relieves stress

Apparently watching TV contributes to lower blood pressure, thus stress relief. It’s also fun. Win.

5. Watching TV can boost your creativity

Having TV on in the background while you’re working? Studies reveal the noise of a TV can boost your creativity, even if you’re not completely engaged with it… Same sort of effect a noisy coffee shop would have.

6. Watching TV is a good source of sex education

Girls are more likely to practice safe sex, thanks to teen dramas. Studies found teenagers got more education from these dramas from sex ed at schools, so maybe sex ed should just consist of OC re-runs?
