Former Prime Minister John Howard says there looks to be some positive signs on US gun control following the high school shooting in Florida last month.

“What is so encouraging is the mobilisation of young people,” Mr Howard told FIVEAA. “If you could have a march on Washington from young people equivalent to the civil rights marches of the 1960s it would be a transforming event.”

“I’m encouraged by what President Trump has said and done. It may well be that a person coming the republican side of American politics in a sort of Nixon-goes-to-China context could well be the turning point, we’ll have to wait and see.”

“If America as a result of this most recent tragedy begins to turn her back on the mass proliferation of guns, that would be a wonderful thing. It will save many thousands of American lives of all ages years into the future.”
