City revellers are twice as likely to suffer violence in Adelaide’s west end than anywhere else in the city, according to a new report.
The Advertiser has published the figures, which were included in a police briefing to Attorney-General John Rau.
According to the report, the area around Hindley St poses a “heightened risk to public order and safety during the hours of 6pm and 6am each Friday and Saturday”.
In 2016 there was an average of nine offences against people each weekend in Hindley St.
Police have since been given special powers to patrol the precinct, which include permission to:
- use metal detectors to search an individual
- ban people from entering the area at certain times
- direct troublemakers to “move on”
- remove children from the area
- and fine people more than $1000 for behaving in a disorderly or offensive manner.
