An Adelaide Black Lives Matters rally has been given an exemption from state restrictions limiting outside gatherings to 80 people and will go ahead at 12 noon in Victoria Square on Saturday.

The anti-racism protest is being held to show solidarity with unarmed black man George Floyd, who was killed last week while in the custody of a Minneapolis police officer.

On Friday Police Commissioner Grant Stevens announced the event would receive an exemption from existing restrictions:

“It is our intention to enable that protest to occur in a peaceful and orderly way,” he said.

“In doing so, I have just signed a direction that allows an exemption to the rules regarding crowd numbers for this particular type of activity.”

According to 7 News, Commissioner Stevens said police would still monitor the rally to ensure the rally was peaceful and that social distancing was being maintained.

Anyone who is unwell is also encouraged to stay at home. More than 2,000 people are expected to attend.
