Former SA opposition leader David Speirs was arrested and charged last month with two counts of supplying a controlled substance.

Mr Speirs posted on social media on Saturday revealing his home had been raided by police and he was arrested and charged.

According to a statement later released by SAPOL:

As a result of the public statement made on social media by MP David Speirs in which he reveals he had been arrested, police can confirm that on September 26 2024 Mr Speirs was arrested at Berri and charged with two counts of supplying a controlled substance between August 2 and 3 and on August 9.

Following this his residential premises was subsequently searched. Mr Speirs was given police bail and will appear in court at a later date.

In his video Mr Speirs says he will “fight to clear my name of any allegations”.

Earlier he announced his resignation from State Parliament.

Mr Speirs took a leave of absence in September after video emerged of him appearing to snort a white powder in his home. When asked by reporters about the video, Mr Speirs said it was a “deepfake”.
