Councillor Alex Antic says it’s not the Adelaide City Council’s place to enter the debate about moving the date of Australia Day celebrations.

The council has backed a move by the Australian Local Government Association to lobby the federal government about changing the date.

“I certainly prefer to be concentrating on services,” Alex told FIVEAA breakfast on Monday.

“I don’t want that to be the City of Adelaide’s position. I don’t want local governments entering into these debates.

“Unfortunately this is now a motion on the books.

“I will asks council on Tuesday night to endorse a position which is effectively saying to the Australian Local Government Association: ‘Please stick to the script and we want the status quo.’

“Ratepayers money is being used effectively for activism…

“I wonder whether sometimes this relates back to people living out their federal parliamentary fantasies on the floor of local councils.”
