Member for Hindmarsh Steve Georganas has paid tribute to Leon Byner in federal parliament over Leon’s advocacy for people with no voice.

Mr Georganas thanked Leon for sticking up for customers who were essentially subsidising energy companies who delayed the installation of solar panel smart metres.

(On Wednesday Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg announced plans to clamp down on the delays.)

Last week Mr Georganas told parliament the delaying tactic was a “box of tricks”.

“If this occurred in reverse, the consumer would go to jail for stealing electricity. There is no doubt about that. They would be hauled in front of a judge, and it would be treated as stealing,” he said.

“Leon Byner on FIVEAA has been referring consumers to the ombudsman and doing some great work on this. I’d encourage him to continue putting pressure on the energy companies. Leon Byner is a great advocate who often fights injustice and bad policy on behalf of people who don’t have a voice.”
