Nick Murray’s whirlwind ride from the farm to standing Lance Franklin at the SCG will be hard to beat as the football story of the year, says FIVEAA’s Stephen Rowe.

Murray – who just three weeks ago wasn’t even on an AFL list – will debut for the Adelaide Crows this weekend and looks likely to spend some time on league superstar Buddy.

On Rowey’s Sports Show on Thursday Rowey said:

“Six months ago Nick Murray was playing country football for Ganmain Grong Grong Matong. He was driving a header 12 hours a day. This week he will debut. Not only will he debut he’s likely to line up at some stage on Buddy Franklin on the SCG. It’s a great story, he’s a ripping lad… three weeks ago he wasn’t even on the list. That is a might story.

“It is remarkable. I doubt there will be a bigger football debut story than this one. Three weeks ago not on a list, six months ago on a tractor playing for a – dare I say – buckle wheel league. It didn’t look terribly flash. And now he’s playing Buddy…

“Beat that as a 2021 footy story. He didn’t come from any of the footy factories, he didn’t come through the draft – he missed two drafts and now he’s on a list.”
