Leon Byner editorial
The Australian bushfire threat is likely to be most serious across the country, says Leon Byner.
In south Australia the Pinery fire, while extinguished, has raised issues about the GRN failure and insufficient backup.
Royal commissions have established a lack of cold burns contributing to bushfire disasters and too much ground fuel.
But when shortcomings in communication are known, it’s unsurprising the community is horrified.
LISTEN to Robert Brokenshire and Tom Koutsantonis:
We spend huge amounts on national security and the massive costs putting soldiers in overseas theatres of war. There is no excuse for Australia to squib on itself in matters of bushfire safety and whatever equipment is necessary, which includes state of the art communication.
This season will be tough and it’s time governments like South Australia rise above politics and do urgently everything required to ensure the brave volunteers can communicate in performing their duties in the field .
There is no more important security than from bushfires. The sad footage of devastated properties and loss of life must surely spur governments into action.
If we can spend tens of thousands on private jets flying politicians to wherever, then we can find the resources to protect the brave and the vulnerable.
