WNBA player and AFLW star Erin Phillips has been cut from her US basketball team, the Dallas Wings.

In a one sentence announcement on their website, The Wings revealed they have “waived” the Aussie guard.

Erin had returned to the US following the AFLW season, in which she starred for the Adelaide Crows, to finish the second year of her contract with the Wings.

Reporting for Fairfax, Roy Ward said the Wings had decided to let Erin go as part of a “youth movement”.

“The move has been a shock with Phillips’ defence and leadership strongly admired by her Wings teammates,” Ward wrote.

If another club doesn’t immediately pick up Phillips, she will become a free agent and another club could sign her. But, according to Ward, it’s a tough time of year to be waived, with all clubs cutting down their rosters.
