Kane Cornes has offered up a frank assessment of former teammate Jared Polec’s football abilities and suggested the Port speedster should immediately sign the “irresponsible” deal offered to him by North Melbourne.
“$700,000 a year for five years, that’s the reported offer from North Melbourne to out of contract winger Jared Polec,” Cornes said on SEN.
“Has the footy world gone mad?
“Port Adelaide can’t match that offer and nor should they.
“That contract would put Polec in the top three or four highest paid players at Port Adelaide, behind Ollie Wines, Travis Boak and Robbie Gray.
“And five years? Nah.
“Not for an inconsistent outside player that’s missed 24 games through injury in the past four and a half years, and has a history of being shutout of games easily when tagged.
“Since he joined Port Adelaide in 2014, Polec has averaged just 21 disposals, just under seven contested possessions and half a goal per game.
“And whilst yes, I think he improves North’s team next year, on stats alone, he’s a $450,000 player for a maximum of three years…
“This offer from North to Polec smells of complete desperation. I can tell you it is accurate, and it’s completely irresponsible.
“Polec should sign that deal today.”
